Indonesian 308 ammo
I need a little help here. I'm negotiating with a fellow who has battle packs of 200 rounds of Indonesian 7.62 x 51 NATO spec ammo who states that it is noncorrosive, reloadable boxer primed. It is the MU-2TJ, manufactored by Pinot, made in 1985. Price is $120.
I have searched all over the net, and found various claims of noncorrosive, but berdan primed. Anyone have any experience with this ammo? |
Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
Don't have experience with this ammo, but the price is fairly high. Check out Aimsurplus for South African at .50 per pop. That is pretty good stuff. And Aim is a good company to deal with.

Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
If Indonesian is boxer primed, it might be worth the extra 10 cents. If not, I would go with the South African.

Indonesian is Berdan N/C. It's good ammo and worth more than SA for accuracy's sake. If you're just blasting, then SA will do.

Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
I've actually had good acuracy in my rifles from SA. Each of my M14 clones will shoot under 2MOA except one. That one likes FNM best.
I haven't shot every type of surplus, but I've tried SA, FN, FNM, Prvi Partisan and Win and Rem commercial. SA is the most accurate in my rifles. Handloads will beat all of them in every rifle, but that gets time consuming and I now only load for bolt actions anymore due to shortage of components. Of course, all rifles are different, so YMMV. |
Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
Thanks for all the answers.
I have a few battlepacks of the South African, and it works fine. I'm interested in the Indonesian because the seller stated it was boxer primed, but everything I have read, as well as eat beef's report states otherwise. As for primers, it is interesting that the primer market has vanished. Anyone else believe that it is a choke hold on ammunition. It's strange tho, because ammo is becoming more available, why not primers? Possibly because handloaders are more accuracy oriented? |
Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
.60 a round is about the going rate. It is good ammo so if you can afford it stash it as those battle packs are getting scarce and pricey. In a year you could probably resell them at a profit the way things are going.

Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
I bought a battlepack of Malaysian 7.62x51 a few years ago from Dick's Sporting Goods. About 20% of the ammo misfires. The lot number appears to be FNM 80-14. Sorry I couldn't be of help. Maybe this will help someone buying the Malaysian stuff down the road.

Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
FNM is Portugese. Yours must have been stored improperly, I've shot thousands of rounds of FNM from the 70s with no misfires. It's accurate, too.

Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
You might be right. The battlepack has no markings on it. The guy at Dick's said it was Malaysian but I'll take your word for it. I wonder if it was manufactured in Portugal for Malaysia. I was told that it was around 30 years old when I bought it.
The pack was sealed when I bought it and I started using it that month. Who knows how it was stored before Dick's got it. I saw an interesting article last month on ammo shelf life depending on the temp at which it was stored. If I can find it I'll post it. |
Re: Indonesian 308 ammo
Seems a little pricey. I was at cabela's last week and they had Magtech brand .308 ammo on sale for $29.99/box (50 rd box). At least that stuff is current production and USA made and if you purchase it in conjunction with a coupon and some Visa Rewards Points it would run you a lot less than their advertised price. Just something to consider.
